“Intense underbrush aromas, black berries and violet lead the nose on this delicious blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 5% Ciliegiolo. The juicy palate offers a core of ripe black cherry accented with notes of tobacco, black pepper and orange peel; minerality and a hint of coffee bean add depth. It’s is an incredible value.”

This is the last of Erik Banti’s 2011 Morellino di Scansano. This wine is juicy and delicious with just the right amount of age behind it. Don’t worry, the new vintage of Carato is also here. The Carato has not been released quite yet, though we do expect it any day.

Erik Banti is a man of style and panache. He is a true Italian gentlemen and it is always a pleasure to see him. Besides being a visionary winemaker, Erik has had a number of careers including race car driver and golfer at one time attaining Italian golf champion.

The Morellino di Scansano appellation was created through the vision and persistence of Erik Banti. Morellino di Scansano has become one of the more sought after wines to come out of Tuscany. The prices tend to be very fair and the quality is often superb.

Erik Banti was the driving force that turned the Maremma in to a world class wine producing region. It was for this reason, he was able to buy land at a small percentage of what it is worth today which translates in to wine deals for the rest of us.

Tuscan wines can be complex and big, but they have also mastered the technique of producing a simple, delicious, every day wine. Carato is the perfect every day wine. This is what many people go to as their “Tuesday night wine”. We have been loving the Carato for years and years and so have our clients. No wonder it is never in stock. No matter how much we bring, it always seems to disappear very quickly.

Yesterday, i wrote about how it felt as though Spring was in the air. Guess it was just a tease. A little chilly out this morning. Either way, Spring will be here sometime. Looking for some delicious Southern Italian white wine? Sanpaolo’s 2015 Greco di Tufo has just been released. This wine has quickly become a client favourite here at WineOnline.ca. At under $20/bottle with a 92 Point score, this Greco is a steal.

Happy Thursday everyone!
