FEATURED WINES

96 Point Oregon Pinot. Phelp’s Creek 2014 Cuvee Alexandrine. Burgundian Winemaker, Oregon Terroir. Beautiful Juice.

Oregon is the only terroir I am aware of where the terroir for the production of Pinot Noir wines rivals that of Burgundy.

PINOT NOIR CUVEE ALEXANDRINE BY PHELPS CREEK VINEYARDS 2014

“Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is remarkably complex, offering scents of dark red and black cherry and berry, rose petal, aged leather, and turned earth. A noticeable contrast to the “Beehive” bottling, with more structure, more savory and earthy facets, less flashy fruit, and slightly more oak contribution at this young age. A very sophisticated wine that is clearly built to age. The mid weight flavors of black raspberry and blackberry are set off by notes of spice and toast and emerge slowly in the glass over time. The finish is uncommonly generous as all great wines are. When tasted several hours later, the wine was more giving, indicating that it should be decanted if drunk now, but will benefit from more time in the cellar. Still evolving when tasted from an opened bottle two days later. Enjoy this one for its complexity and longevity.”

Top Oregon Pinot tends to be extremely hard to come by as it is always sold out. We lucked out and got an allocation of the 2014 Phelps Creek Cuvee Alexandrine. For those that don’t know, Alexandrine Roy, is the daughter of Marc Roy, proprietor of Domaine Marc Roy. She is also the winemaker at both of these wineries.

Do you want to taste a range of wines from Phelps Creek? They have been generous enough to create a mixed 6-pack for us with 2 bottles of each of their 3 top cuvees. This will include, 2 bottles Cuvee Alexandrine, 2 bottles of the Beehive Pinot and 2 bottles of the Columbia Gorge Pinot. This brings down the average bottle price to $74/bottle and you will get to experience a range of wines.

We discovered Domaine Marc Roy while travelling through Burgundy and enjoying a meal at the famous Ma Cuisine in Beaune. We were looking for a bottle of Gevrey and the proprietor recommended a bottle from Domaine Marc Roy. We have had a love affair with these wines ever since. Sadly, the allocations are tiny and they always sell through very quickly. When they informed us that Alexandrine, daughter of Marc, and winemaker at Domaine Marc Roy, was also making the wine at Phelps Creek in Oregon, we just had to try the wines. We were not disappointed, the wines are literally spectacular. The Cuvee Alexandrine is among the best i have tasted out of Oregon. The scary thing is, these wines are only going to improve with age.

I have been doing the best i can to broaden my palate lately. I can get caught in a rut drinking Burgundy, Rhone and Piemonte. Yeah, this is not the worst rut to get caught in, but there are a whole host of great wines made outside of these regions. In particular, i have been enjoying American wines, (especially Washington and Oregon), Bordeaux, preferably with plenty of age on it, and Southern Italian wines. Etna wines continue to blow me away with their complexity and how light and wonderful they are.

I guess what i am trying to say, is, don’t get stuck in a wine drinking rut. We have added a feature to help you find more of the wines that suit your preferred style. It’s Friday. Let’s all enjoy the day and the coming weekend.

All the best.
