Volunte’s Montepulciano is Back. $12.95/Bottle. Wine Made by Stefano Chioccioli Should Not Be This Cheap.
|
I am at Prowein right now and just tasted this wine 5 minutes ago. If you are looking for what many people refer to as Tuesday night wine, look no further. This is the ultimate match for pizza, pasta or a whole host of other reasonably simple foods. The only problem is that the wine drinks so well, and the price is low enough that you might find yourself opening a 2nd or 3rd bottle making Wednesday morning a little more difficult than it needs to be.
Both Robert Parker and The Wine Spectator have scored several Chioccioli wines 100 points. Chioccioli makes some of the best wines to come out of Italy. That he has put his name behind the Volunte, only lends credibility to the quality of the wines.
There is something enchanting about a wine that is both simple and delicious. There are many occasions where an easy drinking wine is preferable. Of course, not all Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is easy to drink. The 1st time i tasted this wine, i knew that it was a winner. Soft and round on the palate with just a little bit of tannin to balance out the fruit. Simple, yet delicious. At $12.95/bottle, it is worth considering ordering a couple of cases.
I am going to suggest a couple more wines in the value vein. The Carato is made with the same philosophy as the Volunte, but with Sangiovese as opposed to Montepulciano. We have been drinking the Carato forever and it has garnered some nice scores and awards lately. Sadly, the price is going up. Barring some unforeseen developments, this is the last of this wine you will see at $14.95/bottle. Snap it up.
The only people i am aware of that can match and possibly beat the Italians when it comes to producing value wines, are the Spanish. We have Luzdivinia’s Vina de Moya Bierzo in stock. This vintage has not yet been scored, but this is a perennial Best Value wine. You just don’t find wines produced from 100+ year old vines priced at $16.95. This wine is both a crowd pleaser and a wallet pleaser.
Once again, i am going to keep this short and sweet as i need to get back to the floor to meet with more suppliers and taste more wines in the hope of finding more gems to bring to the Province of Ontario and most importantly, our clients.
Have a great week everyone!
