What happens when a California cult Cabernet producer has great wine that doesn’t go into the final blend? It gets snapped up by the savvy folks at Waterstone and sold at less than one-tenth the price of the original. We can’t tell you what the winery is. Winemaker Philip Zorn told us he had to sign 6 pages of nondisclosure just to get this great stuff. Suffice it to say, this wine was sourced from hillside vineyards in the heart of California Cult Land.

The business side of wine works the same as any other economy. It is built on supply and demand and there is a very delicate balance. Places like the Napa Valley and Bordeaux have mastered the art of making certain wines seem scarce. Who benefits when there is too much great juice to make icon wine from? Well Waterstone for sure, and ultimately you, if you are savvy enough to pick up a case or 2. These wines literally contain the same juice as many of the most famous names in California.

A collaboration between veteran winemaker Philip Zorn and longtime wine executive Brent Shortridge, Waterstone Winery was formed in 2000 when the two men were introduced and discovered a shared interest in creating luxury wines at affordable prices. Bringing together their previously established relationships with Napa Valley growers and vintners, the pair set out to develop balanced wines of varietal character through intelligent sourcing.

These wines are only available to us with good quantities a few times a year.
