“Delicate scents of red berry, blue flower and crushed stone lift out of the glass. The vibrant, elegantly structured palate offers succulent wild cherry, fleshy black raspberry, cinnamon and light baking spice alongside fresh acidity and smooth, supple tannins. A mineral vein gives it precision and intensity.”

Tenuta di Fessina produces some amazing wines. It is hard to imagine that with all the work that goes in to them, they are able to keep the prices where they are. 1st of all, in case you were not aware, Etna is an active volcano and could erupt at any time destroying all the hard work put in to creating these vineyards. Second, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, much like Pinot Noir, are low yielding, terroir driven grape varietals ensuring small quantities of wine. These wines are a work of passion. In this case, (no pun intended), for just over $200, you will have nothing short of 6 amazing wine experiences.

Often, a picture is worth a thousand words. Just look at the image above. Making wine in the shadow of an active volcano can only result in interesting wines. Once you experience these wines, i am sure that you will agree. Don’t miss this nice little treat.

Etna wines are terroir driven. Much of Southern Italy has volcanic soils, and many of the wines are very good, but nothing is quite like the wines of Etna. 1st of all, Etna is the most active of the volcanoes making the soil the most interesting. Second, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio don’t seem to be grown outside the Etna DOC. This combination of grape and terroir can often produce something special.

Where is the Sicilian Nero d’Avola you ask? We do tend to receive an awful lot of requests for the Purato. Well, guess what folks? Purato’s 2015 Nero d’Avola is in stock, $14.95/bottle, and this year, it won a gold medal at the Berlin Wine Competition. Yeah, this wine is a steal.

Volcanic soil Aglianico you say? Elena Fucci’s Titolo Aglianico del Vulture is a wonderful little treat and deserves your attention. This wine is from Basilicata, (the arch of the boot of which makes up Italy). Yup, the 2014 Titolo won top honours from all of the Italian wine guides, (see directly below). There are only a few cases left…
