“Complex bouquet of orange and lemon zest, tropical fruits as well as a sprinkling of vanilla and fennel. Solid backbone with a flinty, mouth watering acidity and a well integrated oaky touch adding some complexity. This is a beautifully concentrated, intense wine with a lingering finish.”

The Gross brothers are remarkable people and winemakers. They are 100% dedicated to making wines that are out of this world. Gross winery straddles the border of Slovenia and Austria. One brother works the Slovenian vineyards, while the other works the Austrian side. The Colles is from the Slovenian side. Just in case you didn’t catch it, the Gross brothers are pictured above with their father.

When i say the Colles is the Best Sauvignon Blanc i have ever tasted, it is not 100% true, the Nussberg, Gross’ top wine from their Austrian vineyards is just as good, but unfortunately, is twice the price. The flavour profile for the Nussberg is very different, but equally fabulous. We have not brought the Nussberg in yet, but once you try the Colles, you might just want to spring for a case or 2. If so, please let us know and we will order some in.

For those that would suggest that Sauvignon Blanc does not age well, i will say, these wines from Gross unquestionably do, and not just that, they get better. We were tasting wines going back to 1992 that tasted as if they could and likely would age gracefully for another 25 years. To say i was blown away is an understatement.

We took the time to go out and visit the Gross brothers at the winery on our last visit to Europe. Sometimes, if you want to gain a better understanding of a wine, you need to meet the people that make and see the terroir where the grapes grow. In this case, both are spectacular. These wines are simply amazing.

There is not a lot of stock available as people pre purchased this one, but there is more on the way, and the last of what they had available waiting at the winery for us. If you are a fan of mind bogglingly good white wine, you simply want to order all you can.

Tis the season for white wine, at least it is coming. We have had some good ones arrive over the last week or so including some Albarino from Rias Baixis and the Casal de Arman from Ribeiro. Both are client favourites and will be great to have around all spring and summer and much longer for the Casal de Arman if that is your desire.

I always get excited around this time of year. I love that we start to enjoy lighter foods and wines. Many people believe that they only like red wines. For some, i am sure that this is true. For others, i am guessing that they have just not given white wine a fair shake. There is a misconception that white wine should cost less than red. This does not make a lot of sense. It costs just as much to make an amazing white wine as it does to make an amazing red wine. So, if you typically spend $20 on a bottle of red, and spend $13 on a bottle of white wine and expect equal quality from both wines, you will likely not receive it. All i am suggesting here, is that if you are one of those people that believe they do not like white, but perhaps, have not given it a fair shot, it might just be a good idea to give it another try as white wine can be simply splendid.

Have a great weekend!
