Many would suggest that Cannubi is Barolo’s best vineyard. The Borgogno’s just happen to own a big chunk of it and only the best grapes go in to the Riserva.

The wine exhibits ruby tones in its youth, but will develop garnet hues and orange reflections over time. The ethereal bouquet is intense and persistent with lush fruit and spice notes. The palate is rich and elegant with firm tannins and a long finish.

Think the above picture looks like a postcard? Perhaps that is because it is a postcard. Cannubi hill/vineyard is the top of the pictured hill with Borgogno’s winery and restaurant right there at the top. Not a bad spot to have your winery. It looks directly across a small valley to the town of Barolo itself. The Borgogno’s are lucky enough to have some of the best vineyards along with a perfectly situated winery. Picturesque would be an understatement.

We were just in Piedmont tasting the new releases from Borgogno. This tasting included the 2011 Cannubi Riserva as well as many other wines. Just so you know the production of Riserva in 2011 was teeny tiny and therefore has not been sent to critics for ratings. To be honest, this is one of the best wines i have ever tasted to come from Borgogno. According to them, the grape selection for the Riserva in 2011 was painstaking producing something truly epic. Even now, this wine is absolutely wonderful and it is only going to get better over the next decade or so.

Dolcetto is the grape for the wine lover that likes something easy and juicy. For clarity, i am just such a wine drinker. This particular Dolcetto has more depth than most. Perfect at lunch or with less complex meals such as pizza, or pasta with simple sauce. We don’t always bring in Dolcetto, but Borgogno’s 2015 was simply irresistible. If you are a lover of Dolcetto, don’t miss this one. In case you were wondering, I bought 2 cases.

Cavallotto’s 2012 Baroli have finally started to arrive. The Bricco Boschis is now in stock. I always like to throw in a little treat for those of you that read this far and the Bricco Boschis definitely qualifies. This is one of the best wines to come out of Piemonte in any vintage.

Piemonte is one of the world’s premier wine regions. If you are a wine lover, but have not yet discovered how great the wines can be from Piemonte, it is time to try.
