“The 2014 ‘La Devèze’ is composed of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault and offers aromas and flavors of fresh crushed raspberries, black olive, pepper, lavender and wild herbs. On the palate this is well balanced, backed by a lovely silky texture, which leads into finish where raspberries, white pepper and lavender continue to linger. This will be best if allowed another year or so of additional bottle age to flesh out and all come together.”

It is hard to beat a well made Cotes du Rhone from a good producer. The French, who tend to be more knowledgable about French wine, and wine in general than the rest of us, often reach for a well made Cotes du Rhone, when looking for something delicious that will not break the bank. When Cotes du Rhone is done right, it can rival much more prestigious and expensive wines. The Cotes du Rhone Le Deveze from Domaine Dionysos is done right and is in its drinking wheelhouse. This makes a for a great house red.

Nothing will do, but the Cairanne from Dionysos? Though much of it was purchased pre arrival, there are a number of cases remaining. Be one of the lucky ones to snatch up one or 2.

We lucked out when we picked up Domaine de Dionysos. They are a tiny little producer in the Rhone Valley. We discovered them at Prowein a couple of years back while tasting through literarily hundreds of wines. Their Cairanne was the standout. The Cotes du Rhone Le Deveze is nearly as good, but the price is lower as the wine does not have the village designation.

There was a time when blends were thought to be inferior wines, and few wines were marketed as blends. For example, almost all Bordeaux wine is blended and all of the 1st Growths certainly are, but they are not marked as such on the bottles. Many of the Rhone Valley’s wines, and a lot of the more prestigious wines are also blends.

In the end, the vast majority of us want to drink something very good at a price that is fair. The wines from Dionysos are some of the best values i am aware of from the Rhone Valley. They deliver on every level and they will even age nicely over the next 3 – 5 years. The wines from Dionysos will be great for the cottage.

Today, we have a little treat for those of you that read this far down. We received a larger than expected allocation of 1995 Domaine de Chevalier Grand Cru, (Graves). You want a perfectly aged Bordeaux drinking in its prime, this is it.

Have a great day!
