“This fragrant Nebbiolo opens with intense, ample aromas of kitchen spice, chopped herb, leather, dark-skinned berry, tilled soil and a whiff of pressed rose petal. On the firmly structured smooth palate, notes of licorice, cinnamon and truffle accent a core of juicy dark cherry. Polished tannins provide the framework while a mineral vein energizes the finish.”
This is the 1st of Vallana’s 2007 Gattinara to be released in Ontario. Vallana is one of those wineries that does not believe in releasing their wines until they deem them ready to drink. 2007 was a very warm vintage which typically means that the wines are ready to drink younger. In the case of the 2007 Gattinara from Vallana, it is drinking perfectly now, and will do so for at least the next 5 years. This wine usually goes very fast, so get yours before it is gone.
For those of you not familiar with Gattinara, this is Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte, (Northern Piedmont). If you don’t want to take our word for the quality of these wines, see some comments from critics below.
“Intense, traditionally-made wines that ooze with character.” – Robert Parker
“…wines that must be considered outstanding among Italy’s fine reds…” – Burton Anderson
Vallana makes red wines of incredible longevity from Spanna, the local name for Nebbiolo. Campi Raudii, Spanna, Boca and Gattinara are the four Vallana Nebbiolo-based wines. Vallana makes wine also from other native varieties, like the world-famous Barbera. The firm was established in the current form in 1937, but the Vallana family has a long tradition in the wine business dating back to the eighteenth century.
In Alto Piemonte viticulture was introduced in the II century BC, and the Vallana tradition in the wine business is lost in time. However, the first available news date back to 1787. In those days, the Canon Gaetano Perrucconi, was appointed butler of the Diocese by the Bishop of Novara. The priest devoted the family property of Montalbano (in the town of Boca) to the production of the best “Spanna” in order to match the quality needs of the highly demanding Bishop’s see.

Cavallotto and Vallana are very similar in the way that there is never any compromise when it comes to quality, but also tradition. Cavallotto produces some of the best traditional Barolo to come out of Piemonte. There are a few 6-packs remaining of the 2012.
Then there is the 2011 Terra di Lavoro. This wine has now landed in Canada. I am very comfortable saying that the wines of Terra di Lavoro have reached cult status, both for WineOnline.ca clients, and around the world. The scores are crazy, and people just go batty for this wine, (me too).
Have a great Tuesday!
