QUINTA DO CONVENTO DOURO BY SENHORA DO CONVENTO 2014

“The Douro delivers as much value as any wine region in the world.”

Bottle Price : $21.95

Case Price : $263.40

Winery : Senhora do Convento

Wine Region : Douro (Portugal), Portugal (Portugal)

Bottle Per Case : 12 x 750 ml

Food Pairing : Breads, Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Roasted Vegetables

A blend of the three classic varieties from the Douro: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. Aged on its fine lies, in 100% French oak barrels (30 % new), no filtration, natural clarification, gravity flow is used for racking. This wine has a deep and intense colour, with purple hints. Black fruit on the nose, bilberries, truffles. Fresh and round body, concentration, supple tannins, well-balanced and fruity finish.

Portugal’s Douro Valley is nigh on perfect wine country. Steep slopes, a dry climate and there is almost always a breeze coming down the valley. The 3 most prevalent grapes are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. Almost all of the red table wines are made from a blend of these 3 grapes. Unless you know Portuguese wines, these grapes are likely unfamiliar to you. Perhaps this is the reason so many wine lovers have yet to discover Portuguese wines. The wines from Quinta do Convento tend to sell through quickly every time, so if you would like a case, it would be a good idea to order sooner than later.

Though these wines are Portuguese, they have a decidedly Canadian influence. Donald Ziraldo, founder of Inniskillin, and the man whom many consider to be the Godfather of the Canadian wine industry is in charge of the Senhoro do Convento winery.

The 2014 Quinta do Convento is structured and delicious. This wine is young and will continue to improve over the next 5 years or so.  The Quinta do Convento tends to drink as if it was left bank Bordeaux, with slightly more rustic tannins. I would suggest owning a case, (or a few), of this wine, would be a solid investment.

Today feels like one of those days for big and bold red wines. The Quinta do Convento certainly fits the bill, but we have some more client favourites available including Kingston Estate’s Limestone Coast Shiraz. This wine is a steal at $18.95/bottle. The 2014 garnered a 94 point score. The 2015 has not yet been rated.

Ryder’s Monterrey Cali Cab has been our best selling Cali Cab since we started to work with the Scheid 3 years ago or so. The price to quality ratio here is amazing. At $21.95 bottle, this is a good a deal as one can find on California Cabernet here in Ontario. Oh yeah, this wine scored 95 points as well.

It’s Victoria Day! Whether you feel like you need to celebrate the queen, or not, this is a great opportunity to get some well deserved R & R.

Have a great day!
