In the shadow of the famous Towers of San Gimignano, Tuscan estate Le Rote makes a wonderfully charismatic Chianti Colli Senesi from 100% Sangiovese. It has rich, chewy dark fruit, ripe tannins, yet finishes very dry and clean. Remarkably, this wine was aged a full 1.5 years before release, a very rare and determined decision for a non-riserva Chianti — and the results show in the bottle. Smooth, black-cherry and sweet tobacco linger on a faint, pleasant finish that is touched off by just the right hint of oak. Lovely.

The Le Rote Chianti has quietly become one of our client favourite wines, and certainly the favourite Chianti. At Le Rote, they are going the extra mile to ensure that the wine is as good as it can be. It is the only non riserva Chianti that i am aware of where they bottle age an extra 18 months prior to release. The 2012 is in its perfect drinking window.

The picture above reminds us, that there is just something about Tuscany. Yes, it is most likely the most famous part of Italy, but why? Is it the food? The epically beautiful countryside? Or is it the wine? I am guessing it is a combination of all 3. If you have yet to visit, i suggest you do so as it is one of the experiences of a lifetime.

There are very often good reasons that wines become so sought after they attain, what we call, “cult status”. First off, the wine typically has to be really good, next there has to be some mystique around the wine. The mystique is typically created by a winemaker, or producer doing something different than his/her peers. This difference is what creates the je ne sais quoi that creates the excitement around the particular wine. The Le Rote Chianti Colli Senesi is certainly not your average Chianti and is worth the experience.

When you drink Colognole’s 2011 Riserva Del Don, i am reminded much more of a Brunello than Chianti. In fact, if you are a fan of Brunello, but want to drink something slightly more approachable in price, Chianti Riserva is usually a good bet. The terroir is similar, the grape is the same and there is often a similar amount of time in oak.

Sometimes drinking a wine, that is simple, easy and approachable is just what we are looking for. The best entry level Chianti embody these characteristics. The Viticoltori Senesi Aretini Chianti drinks well north of its very modest price tag and is the perfect company for pizza or simple pasta dishes. It doesn’t get much better under $15/bottle.
