Piemonte is one of the world’s most famous wine regions, but to some, it remains a mystery. For me, Piemonte is the region that comes closest to Burgundy in style and level of finesse. Burgundy, across the board, produces the most expensive wines in the world. Piemonte, and especially Barolo and Barbaresco are terroir driven much like the wines of Burgundy and the wines are more often than not, spectacular.

The nice thing about Piemonte is that overall, the wines tend to be much less expensive than the wines from Burgundy. The other thing is there is a lot less bottle variation in Piemonte. There is a much better chance that you will get exactly what you are expecting when you pull the cork.

Mauro Manzone is a young man, but his winemaking knowledge has been passed down from his father and grandfather. He also went to school for winemaking ensuring his knowledge of the latest techniques. The Manzone wines are starting to be considered when talking about the great producers of Piemonte.

The moral of the story here is if you are a lover of great wines and have the patience to wait around until the wines are ready to drink, you really want to purchase a case or a few of this wine. This wine will start to come in to its own around 2022. For a wine of this quality, $69/bottle is a steal.

As i mentioned in the opening sentence, when Barolo is drinking well, it is hard to find anything to rival it. One of the really nice things about Barolo is the drinking window tends to be really long. Yes, the wines will change a lot during this drinking window, but that is half the fun.

For me, a bottle of Barolo is in its perfect drinking window, when the fruit is still prevalent, the tertiary flower aromas, (preferably violets and roses), are there in full force and the tannins have smoothed out. When Baroli reach this stage of maturity, it is hard to find anything better.

We have a few cases remaining on each of the purchase orders below. Both of these wines are from Piemonte giants. Both Borgogno and Cavallotto are names spoken with reverence in Piemonte and around the world. Any, or all of the wines featured today will be very nice additions to your cellar. In 10 years, you will wish you purchased more.
