FEATURED WINES

Barahonda’s Blanco. $14.95/Bottle. Old Vines. Unbelievable Value. A Cross Between a Sancerre and a Condrieu.

When i tasted this wine blind, i could not put my finger on exactly what it was, but it tasted amazing and expensive.

BARAHONDA BLANCO BY SEÑORÍO DE BARAHONDA 2016

It is hard for me to imagine that the price of this wine is $14.95.

Wine Region : Spain (Spain), Yecla (Spain)

Bottle Per Case : 12 x 750 ml

Striking clear yellow in colour with light green hues the wine clearly shows tropical fruit and hints of citrus. The intense aromas are followed by freshness and elegance on the palate and a long finish where the characteristic green fruits, typical to the Verdejo grape variety, are clearly present.

Do you get excited about stunning white wine that costs less than $15/bottle? I certainly do. The Verdejo vines where the grapes grow the grapes that produce these wines are some of the oldest on the Barahonda vineyards. The sad part is, 20 years ago, white wine from this part of the world was very much not in style, and they ripped up most of their Verdejo vineyards resulting in a very small production of this wine. The Barahonda Blanco is the ultimate wine to match with a piece of fish off the BBQ.

WANT TO LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT BARAHONDA AND THEIR VINEYARDS, WE HAVE A LITTLE VIDEO CONTENT ON OUR PRODUCT PAGES ABOUT BARAHONDA.

As i mentioned above, we were asked to taste this wine blind. When we tasted this, i was not even aware that Barahonda produced any white wines, therefore, it was not at the top of my mind that i was drinking wine from extremely old Verdejo grapes, or even from the region of Yecla. The 1st thing that came to mind, because of the weight of the wine in my mouth, was Condrieu, the 2nd, because of the floral nose, was Sancerre, the 3rd, because the minerality, and especially the limestone, which was very apparent, was Chablis. When 3 of my favourite white wines are all coming to life within a glass of wine, you know you are on to something special. When Alberto Candela, owner of Barahonda told me the cost of the wine, i begged for an allocation. They were generous enough to award us some, but not much as the production is quite small and the demand is high.

DON’T WORRY, WE HAVE MORE OF BARAHONDA’S REDS ON THE WAY AS WELL. BOTH CARRO AND CAMPO ARRIBA WILL BE ARRIVING IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE. SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FEATURES.

The Yecla region is both rustic and magical. They have been producing wines here for a very long time and have some ancient vines. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre and Verdejo and the grapes that are primarily grown here.

If you are wondering how we continue to find the up and comer wine producers and especially those from Spain, it is due to the fact that we have legs on the ground over there. Jonny has been full time with WineOnline.ca for nearly a decade and has the job of being on top of the European wine trends before they make it over here to North America. I commend him on the work he has done and continues to do. It is wonderful to be able to represent such terrific wineries.

On that note, I will happily feature a couple more wonderful little treats from Barahonda. Both of these wines have become client favourites and we have, to date, been unable to keep them in stock as the wines are typically sold out upon arrival. Therefore, i do suggest reserving your case, or cases, now in order to avoid disappointment.

The weather finally feels like Summer. Make sure you have the right wines to properly enjoy it.

Have a great WEEKEND!
