A gold-medal winner at the 2016 Berliner Wein event. This southern Italian packs loads of licorice, tobacco and vanilla. Full-bodied and smooth.

Puglia produces some amazing wines. Much like the wines from Southern Spain, or Portugal, i often wonder how it is that wine this good stays so darn inexpensive. In case price and quality are not reason enough to purchase a wine, Puglia has some of the world’s most beautiful terroir.

We had the wines come in from Pignataro back in March, but they sold out so quickly that i imagine many of you were not able to get any at all. The 2014 Nero di Troia has an abundance of fruit and depth, but is still fresh and extremely drinkable. We tried to bring in enough to meet demand this time, but we will see what happens.

The Southern Italians have been producing wine for a very long time. The weather is perfect with warm sunny days and Mediterranean breezes ushering in cooler evenings. The soil is mostly volcanic which tends to add more depth and complexity to wines. Best of all, the winemakers more often than not, have a whole ton of experience and knowledge which has been passed down from generation to generation. Pignataro’s Nero di Troia will match beautifully with red meat off the BBQ.

A Mano flat out makes great wines. Their Rose is some of the best i get to taste from Italy. They have managed to attain the beautiful salmon colour typically reserved for wines from Provence, instead of the darker pink colour that most Italian Rosato embodies. Oh yeah, want some really good Montepulciano from Abruzzo? I know i do. This wine is new and is along the same lines as the Fonte Romana we used to carry. In the land of great Montepulciano, the Zurle is a showstopper. Have a taste and you will know what i am talking about.
