“There are notes of beef blood intermixed with wild red acid berries and flowers, with good freshness. The upbringing was 14 months in French barriques. The palate is extremely fresh, but combining high acidity with incredible power. There is less difference in the vintages in this Norte than in the Finca Valdepoleo, here it feels like the vineyard–besides being smaller–is more consistent; the character of the place also seems to be stronger than the style of the vintage. Not really easy to decide between this 2013 and the 2014.”

Rarely do we get wine this serious at prices that are remotely approachable. The wines from Pujanza are already being spoken about with the legendary names from Rioja, and for good reason. The terroir where the Norte and Valdepoleo come from is some of the best in Rioja, the vines are now in their prime and their winemaker is experienced and amazing at his job.

The 2013 was cool and somewhat difficult in Rioja. This was one of those interesting vintages in Rioja where the great winemakers made amazing wines, and the lesser winemakers made wines that were a lot less than amazing. Carlos San Pedro is the winemaker at Pujanza and i am of the opinion that he is one of the best winemakers in Rioja and Spain for that matter. You need only to taste the 2013 wines from these guys and you will understand why i am so excited by, both Carlos, and the wines produced by Pujanza.

For those that are more comfortable spending $40/bottle as opposed to $80, the 2013 Finca Valdepoleo is really a wine that you do not want to miss. It was supposed to come in 12-packs, but somehow showed up in 6’s. Yes, this gives clients the opportunity to buy less wine, but i am of the opinion that once you have tried it, you are going to wish you bought 12.

THE CASE QUANTITIES OF THESE WINES ARE VERY SMALL

I can’t help but notice that it is quite summery out there today. We have the ultimate crowd pleasing white wine to serve with food. Yes, it is also amazing on its own, but with food, the wine is out of this world. The Casal de Arman Ribeiro Blanco is simply one of the best white wines to come out of Spain every vintage for at least the last 3.

It’s Friday. Let’s make the best of it. The official start of summer is next week. Let’s make sure we are well prepared with the best wines to drink over the summer.

Have a great weekend everyone!
