The 2014 Ryder Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and elegant, with aromas of black currants and dark cherries accented by hints of chocolate and vanilla. Bright flavors of blackberries and blueberries create a lush mid-palate and the soft tannins lead into a smooth, savory finish.

We went out to visit the people of Scheid and their winery back in May. I have to tell you, i learned a thing or 2 about California terroir, and especially the terroir around Monterey. For 1, there is a breeze that starts up every day around noon, ensuring that the fruit does not get too warm and over ripen. There is also a huge gap between daytime and nighttime temperatures which keeps the freshness in the fruit, and by default, the wines.

The Ryder Cab has been selling out prior to arrival the last few times it came in. This time we had the foresight to back up our last order, (as big as it was), with more wine. People love to drink Cali Cab with their BBQ’d meats, not to mention the countless other occasions for which California Cabernet works perfectly. The Ryder Cab is a crowd pleaser.

The Scheid family, owner of the Ryder and Craftwork brands among others is one of the largest vineyard owners on the Central Coast of California. For a long time Scheid sold all of their grapes to other wine producers. One day, they had an epiphany: Instead of selling off all their fruit to other winemakers, they decided to make their own wines. After hiring top notch winemakers and consultants, they began to bottle. The reception for these wines has been nothing less than amazing. After more than a decade of production, Scheid is still growing at more than 100% annually. The reason for this growth is simple, as i have mentioned above, these are some of the best quality to price ratio wines to come out of California.
