Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée by Domaine du Pegau 2017

The Féraud family – owners of Domaine du Pegau – has been making wine in the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1670. And they are fervent proponents of the most traditional wine-making style of Provence and Rhone. Robert Parker is a big fan!

“I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979”

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Domaine du Pégau crafts wines that epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône. At the same time presenting the unmistakable Pégau character. Domaine du Pégau has received six 100-point scores in less than 10 years! Yet they still deliver down-to-earth Southern France hospitality.

Domaine du Pégau has inspired a cult-like following. Savvy consumers, adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée by Domaine du Pegau 2017: What the Critics Say

“This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.”

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

“Not yet bottled, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and the rest assorted varieties (not destemmed), brought up all in foudre and old barrels. It has classic Pégau notes of ground pepper, earth, meat, truffle, and blackcurrants as well as medium to full body, good density, building tannins, and a great finish. Laurence compared this vintage to 2005, but I think this 2017 has more density and flesh. It’s a beautiful, classic Pégau that reminds me a slightly toned down 2009.”

The Producer: Domaine du Pegau

The estate is run by the charming Laurence Feraud, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year.

Laurence describes the Pegau style through the centuries, “We have always made powerful wines with elegance and sophistication. We look for complexity both in the grapes and their treatment, and we achieve this by choosing the correct soils for our varietals and the barriques in which we age them. Wine in a barrel is like money in the bank, always earning interest.”

Her personal wine resumé began early. She describes being assigned to check the wine level in foudres (600 liter barrels) when she was five.“ My grandmother Elvira was the winemaker—my grandfather was more of an intellectual; he tended the vineyards, along with my father when he became old enough.”

Then as now, the Férauds grow primarily Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, among the eighteen grapes permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including a few white varieties.

Domaine du Pégau has inspired a cult-like following. Savvy consumers, adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

Laurence favors the rich licorice qualities her fruit exudes, based in part on the red clay soils that make up the terroir.  Various other soils, including the famous galets roulés stone, impart notes of white pepper, the herbal quality known as garrigue and a nice undertone of leather and roasted meat.

These qualities have ranked Domaine du Pegau among the top three labels in the appellation since its inception.  Laurence is passing along family traditions to her son Maxim, ensuring that it will remain a force in Châteauneuf Du Pape for yet another generation.
