What the Critics Say

“This is a classic, firm, mineral driven, very Burgundian chardonnay. I am tempted to compare more to Chablis than Cote de Beaune but Puligny can have this kind of stony yet elegant ambiance. The nose is quite complex with evolving hazelnut, marzipan, toast and wood smoke around green pear fruit. The acidity and minerality make appear “light” but it is not. It is really solid. The spice and minerality hit excellent to outstanding length. Great white wine right under our noses.” 94 points – David Lawrason, WineAlign, May 2020

A great vintage for the Quarry.

“There is no secret that 2016 can align itself with the best of them in Niagara and chardonnay is clearly right in the middle of the discussion. Knowing that, how could the iconic triad of varietal, producer and vineyard not rise like fresh summer fruit cream to the top of the discourse? The years of Pender and Bourgogne barrel studies have come to this; spot on in blending Quarry fruit from wood and associated forests, staves and toasts, here the crux of sonic, sonar, and olfactory waves are met in optimum phenolic crash. The crush of chardonnay, the cryogenic liquid wait and the ultimate goal is achieved. Balance is struck at 12.5 degrees alcohol and all the perfectly seasoned grape tannin you could want. Drink 2020-2027.”

“It never fails to amaze me how slowly the wines from Tawse’s Quarry Road vineyard evolve. The 2016 is barely out of the gates, still a little sulfury, evidently with a very long life ahead. If you’re drinking it now, I’d suggest decanting; the palate is dusty and chalky, acids crunchy and fresh, especially considering the warm 2016 vintage, but Quarry is a cool, windy site – it needs time and/or air. For now it’s all citrus and green apple, cherry blossom and linden, with nary a whiff of oak influence. Length and depth are good now, but will develop further with time no doubt. A great vintage for the Quarry.”
