Cellar Direct: Scarpa’s 1987 Barolo Tettimorra

Barolo Tettimorra DOCG by Scarpa 1987

The 1987 Scarpa Barolo Tettimorra is a Piedmont treasure and is available at WineOnline.

Drinking a traditionally made Barolo just in the right spot is one of the most enjoyable and enthralling wine experiences you can have. The mix of dried roses, cigar box, truffle and dried red fruit is utterly spellbinding. It is rare to find a producer who has kept the bottles in their cellars for decades, waiting for just the right time to release.

Scarpa is one of the founding fathers of Barolo, having been one of the first to label their wines as such in the 1940s. Their mythical back vintage library is now being slowly released and we have worked hard to secure as much of it as possible. These pristine artifacts are akin to discovering long-lost treasures of the wine world, and that’s certainly the case with the 1987 Barolo.

We first released this wine last year at a series of dinners at Buca. We were thrilled at the response, especially from sommeliers who then poured this wine as a part of tasting menus at some of Toronto’s best restaurants. These bottles come directly from the winery. They are a gift to all of us who love well-aged, well-preserved wine that is right in its sweet spot.

Scarpa: Producer of Barolo Tettimorra DOCG 1987

Scarpa was founded in the second half of the eighteenth century by a Venetian migrant, Antonio Scarpa. Still bearing his name, the cellar was handed over to a family from Nizza Monferrato in the late 40’s. Mario Pesce, was a young oenologist then who acquired Scarpa after his studies in Burgundy and Alsace and led the cellar throughout its success over the decades. Those are the years when the rules were set: excellent quality, sustainable agriculture and traditional winemaking methods. This is the benchmark to which Scarpa still stands by today.

Hundreds of bottles of Barolo Tettimorra Scarpa stacked in a stair-like pattern in a brick cellar.

Barolo Tettimorra DOCG by Scarpa 1987: Characteristics

Direct from the Scarpa’s cellar. Splendid garnet red. Refined bouquet of violets, dried rose petals and licorice, tobacco and balsamic notes with hints of clove that follow through on the palate. Great structure, very long finish.
