Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc: Organic, Crisp & Refreshing

Hunky Dory Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc by Huia Vineyards 2020

Hunky Dory Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is the perfect glass at a reasonable price tag. It’s classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, shot through with the kind of minerality that makes Sauvignon Blanc from here different from any other in the world. Grapes from this region are exposed to 30-40% more UV than in other winegrowing regions. The UV rays help ripen the grapes while it’s still relatively cool, which helps seal in their freshness.

This wine will be right-at-home with a massive array of dishes, from creamy goat’s cheese dishes, herby sauces, delicate white fish fillets, pork chops, and almost any salad imaginable. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Claire & Mike Allan started Huia Vineyards in the mid ‘90s. Living amongst the vines in a house they built themselves, they raised their two daughters, Tui & Sophie while handcrafting wine and on occasion honey and olive oil. The couple, who have used biodynamic winemaking principles since 1996, won the Natural/Biodynamic Winery of the Year at the New York International Wine Challenge among more than 1000 organic and conventional made wines entered from 30 countries.

An image of a fair-skinned woman wearing a navy button-up tank top, sat at a light-coloured wooden table. A white and blue porcelain sits atop a wicker placement in front of her, with cranberry arugula salad sat to one side, as she helps herself to grilled pistachio salmon from a serving platter. A chilled bottle of Hunky Dory Sauvignon Blanc sits to the right of her and her plate, just behind the platter of salmon.

This bone-dry Sauvignon Blanc is harvested from three organic vineyards situated on the Wairau Plains. These vineyard sites are sunny and warm, enhancing ripeness. Named after the sailboat the Allan Family uses to navigate the flooded valleys of the Marlborough Sounds into the Tasmanian Sea.

Hunky Dory Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2020: What the Critics Say:

“This is the second label of the talented Huia team who source organic fruit from vineyards outside the winery’s biodynamic estate. This wine offers a beautifully perfumed nose of stone fruit, lime leaf, passion fruit, freshly sliced fig, dried green herbs and a touch of snow pea. It’s the palate that seals the deal: A lovely, chalky texture is kissed by acidity, and there’s a feeling of something mineral and saline to add complexity to the juicy, pristine fruit.”
