Petit Chablis by Roland Lavantureux 2018
There are a lot of incredible white wines in the world, but for me, this 90 Point Petit Chablis by Roland Lavantureux is like coming home. It’s a reminder that so few white wines so consistently deliver everything this wine does: it’s enthralling, it has piercing minerality, texture, intensity…it’s the total package, even in this youthful phase of its life.
Roland Lavantureux is a relative newcomer to Chablis, having founded the winery in 1978 with a dream to make intense mineral driven Chablis that ranks among the best. One generation later, with his sons in charge, his dream is taking shape.
What is interesting is that while they make Grand crus, they are often cited for their incredible Petit Chablis – which is said to be one of the greatest deals in Chablis.
This thirst-quenching wine comes from three hectares of vines, many of which are perched immediately above the hillside that holds all seven Grand Crus. Full of tension, pulverized chalk minerality, and beautifully broad layers normally found in wines double the price, this is a jaw-dropping achievement.
This style of wine is a delightful complement to light meals of chicken and fish, and adds a sweet and buttery freshness to salads and appetizers.
What the Critics Say:
“The 2018 Petit Chablis comes from 35-year-old vines and spent 10 months in stainless steel, 8 months on the fine lees. This has a delightful white peach and light apricot nose that blossoms in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a tangy marmalade notes on the entry, good depth and a subtle reduction on the finish. Excellent.” 90 Points – Neal Martin, Vinous Media, September 2020
