The World’s Best Rosé

Clos du Temple Rosé Cabrieres by Gerard Bertrand 2019

Clos du Temple Rosé Cabrieres by Gerard Bertrand 2019 originates from the “Winery of the Year” and produced by the “Winemaker of the Year.”

In a discussion about French Rosé, one would automatically assume these descriptions belong to a generations-deep, globally revered producer in Provence. Normally, you’d be right, but in today’s case, you’re way off base—by several hundred kilometres.

Named as the International Wine Challenge Winemaker of the Year and Wine Enthusiast’s European Winery of the Year in 2012, as well as Best Vineyard Experience in 2019, Gérard Bertrand is known locally as the “King” of the Languedoc.

Located at the heart of Languedoc in the south of France, Clos du Temple vineyard is located in the historic terroir of Cabrières, the birthplace of Rosé wines. Behind the wheel is Gérard Bertrand, one of the most outstanding winemakers in the South of France. He owns numerous estates among the most prestigious crus of Languedoc- Roussillon. Named as the International Wine Challenge Winemaker of the Year and Wine Enthusiast’s European Winery of the Year in 2012, as well as Best Vineyard Experience in 2019, Gérard Bertrand is known locally as the “King” of the Languedoc.

Gérard Bertrand owns 9 winemaking estates with 470 hectares of vineyards across the best terroirs Languedoc has to offer. Each estate displays its own style, unique across the vintages. They are first and foremost ‘true’ chateaux steeped in history, whose wines regularly feature in competitions and guides.

In a sunny modern bistro, with abstract geometric wall in the background, ivory couches flank small bistro tables and a running bench along the wall. In the foreground, a bottle of Clos du Temple sits atop the corner of a white granite countertop.

The blend of four red grape varieties and one white has been designed to mirror a temple, with each variety plays a role. The Grenache Noir acts as the foundation, with old vine Cinsault and Syrah adding the columns and walls, along with a “sublime” touch of Mourvèdre, and Viognier offering a wonderful aromatic complexity and typicity to the wine as the dome. The result is a perfectly balanced wine, with great length and extraordinary aromatic freshness. It is also a Rosé that will happily cellar, allowing more complex flavours to develop with age.

The Clos du Temple shows that Rosé can be as fine as red wine and also proves to be a suitable match to the complex flavours of modern cuisine.

Earning 96 points and crowned “Master” World’s Best Rosé by The Drink’s Business – Global Rose Masters in 2020.

Each parcel’s grapes are picked by hand at sunrise, and the small bunches pressed at low temperatures to preserve the freshness, flavour and aromas, and prevent too much colouration of the juice, before being vinified separately. Before fermentation, the must is racked and clarified via gravity for 24 hours, without the addition of sulphur. The wines are subsequently aged in new French oak barrels for six to eight months, with bâtonnage (stirring of the lees) and the final blend was assembled on a fruit day.

A seductive wine that keeps you coming back, this is a hugely exciting southern French discovery!

The temple theme has also inspired the elegant bottle design, with its square base and pyramidical punt rising to a circular shoulder that symbolise the cosmos and the principles of biodynamics. Meanwhile, the terroir is evoked by an elegant band of gold showing the undulating hills that surround Clos du Temple.

Clos du Temple Rosé Cabrieres 2019: What the Critics Say

“A lovely red-fruit scented nose, red cherries, balsamic-laced strawberries and peach sweetness. On the palate it’s instantly mouthwatering, juicy and succulent. It has a mineral drive through the palate, softly chalky as it reaches a refreshing ending. It tastes pure and clean, very precise, leaving a really enjoyable rounded flavour in the mouth. Delicate but lively, it would work well as an apéritif but would also stand up to some fresh seafood dishes. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre with between 2-3% of Viognier depending on the vintage. The wine is aged in barrel for structure, depth and complexity.”
