11 YEAR-OLD NEBBIOLO

CAMPI RAUDII LOT 2010

Campi Raudit Lot 2010 is a decade-old Nebbiolo from the legendary Vallana.

Vallana, in Alto Piemonte, was started by Marina Fogarty’s ancestors and to this day makes some of the most enthralling and long-aging wines of the region. Marina’s energy and happiness is infectious. She not only runs the winery with her brother, but is also a teacher for the WSET program and is training to be a Master of Wine, all while having a beautiful family. She is among a group of young women leading Piedmont into the future, in a region that only a generation before had less than a handful wineries run by women.

Vallana has been making wine for 5 generations, since 1780’s. Their wines have proven over many decades to be just as rich, velvety and long lived as some of the greatest Barolos and Barbarescos, of the region.

Most Nebbiolo-based wines cost some serious bucks, so it’s delightful to find one that not only sells for under $40 but also delivers the goods. This wine lacks for nothing. It’s everything one could ask for in a Nebbiolo, being offered at a fraction of the price of their peers and it’s drinkable now to boot!

TASTING NOTE /  Lot 2010 Campi Raudii Library Release has naturally lost some of the fruit intensity seen in this wine when it is younger, and yet it has also retained quite a bit of depth. Orange peel, tobacco, star anise and a host of more exotic floral notes are all found. Aromatically beguiling and constantly changing in the glass, the 2010 has a lot to say. Even with all of its depth, the Campi Raudii has that translucent feel that makes the best wines from Alto Piemonte so compelling.

The Vallana Campi Raudii Lot 2010 is lighter and brighter than most Barolos and Barbarescos, but this Italian red delivers Nebbiolo’s signature earthiness and rusticity along with fresh fruit flavours.

This wine is produced north of the Barolo and Barbaresco crus and the vineyard sits at the foothills of the Alps where the warm Mediterranean and temperate Continental climates of Europe meet. The cooling breeze through the alpine valleys and the presence of large lakes creates moderate conditions that are ideal for Nebbiolo (or “spanna” as the locals call it). For this reason, their wines have stayed an industry secret for decades.
