CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE HOMMAGE A L’AN 1879 BY CROUS ST. MARTIN 2019

Tasting this wine for the first time, we discovered a diamond in the rough, a truly expectational Châteauneuf-du-Pape for less than $60. We thought those days had long since passed, but we were wrong.

The first key ingredient in all great wines is great terroir, and this wine has it in spades.

The first key ingredient in all great wines is great terroir, and this wine has it in spades. When Grenache, which makes up 80% of the blend, is grown in the iconic sandy soils that make all of the region’s greatest wines (Chateau Rayas, Bonneau), with the famous river stones strewn about, it finds a way to give their native reds the kind of energy and lift found in those grown much further north in Burgundy.

The second ingredient is a master winemaker, with an elegant touch. Eric made a clear decision to create an elegant wine that will drink well early and through a long life, and to that end ages the wine in a mix of stainless steel and oak. This translates to the glass in the purest, silkiest, most transparent expression of that famous fruit!

This wine is stunning now after a few hours of decanting, but will age effortlessly for a decade plus. Every sip is a testament to the magic of blending, a perfect synergy of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre.

Wine Producer

Crous St Martin is a name most of never heard of, but it is the brainchild of Rhone expert Harry Bosmans and Eric Bonnet of La Bastide Saint Dominique. Eric’s family has  produced some of the greatest wines of the Southern Rhone for generations, and his attention to detail makes this wine truly special. This is more than a delicious bottle of wine—it’s a multi-hour virtual reality session into the rugged hillsides, cavernous cellars, and ancient, stony vineyards of Southern France.
