100 POINT NAPA VALLEY CABERNET

CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY PEAK EDCORA VINEYARD BY ACUMEN 2015

What makes our job so exciting at WineOnline is the discovery of the next GREAT wine estates around the globe. This is particularly true in Napa Valley, where so many of the most prestigious estates in the New World exist. Finding new, exciting wineries here is like finding a needle in the haystack, which makes it all the sweeter.

“These wines are every bit as good as any of the so-called cult wines of the Napa Valley that retail for $500 and up. My advice is simple: Buy now, before Acumen’s price catches up to its more established competition.”

Robert Whitley, Wine Review Online

Acumen is one of these estates, founded in 2012 at the apex of Atlas Peak – one of Napa’s five incredible Mountain appellations – and already recognized with not one, but two 100-point scores for its single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon expressions! The winery was founded by Proprietor, Eric Yuan, and the late, great Denis Malbec, who cut his teeth at Château Latour in Bordeaux before an illustrious career as one of Napa’s most revered vineyard & winemaking consultants. Today, winemaking is led by Phillip Titus, who joined Acumen in 2020 after making wine at Chappellet’s iconic Pritchard Hill Vineyard for the past 30 years.

This dark-fruited, velvet-textured, luxurious and intricately layered Cabernet blend—from 2015—is among the finest Napa reds on the market. Modelled after the great, classic Napa Valley wines of the 1960s and 1970s—it hails from their most hallowed site; Edcora Vineyard on Atlas Peak, high above the Stags Leap and Oak Knoll Districts in the southeast corner of Napa Valley neighbouring the iconic Stagecoach Vineyards.

The Acumen estate is already recognized with not one, but two 100-point scores for its single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon expressions!

“A rich young Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with lovely harmony and excellent complexity… Proof that a big, young Napa Cabernet Sauvignon can offer a marvelous sense of finesse… I’ve tasted only a few wines from Acumen, but let me repeat, this is an estate worth remembering.”

TASTING NOTE /

“A very impressive wine that hearkens back to the early days of the Napa Valley, when age-worthy structure and balance were king. Intense berry fruit aromas are joined by notes of fig, baker’s chocolate and savory hints of meat and dried herbs. It’s all there on the palate, with a rich earthy character in front at present that will feather itself into the mix with further aging. Perfectly balanced, nuanced and thought provoking, and a definite cellar trophy at what’s become a bargain price for such a wine. This isn’t a score I throw out very often, but there’s so much to offer here -– I’m all in. Contains 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc.”

“Deep ruby red; aromas of cassis, black currant and anise. Full-bodied with excellent concentration. This has ideal ripeness, yet is not forced or showy, as there is good acidity as well as finely balanced tannins. The wood notes are especially well integrated. A rich young Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with lovely harmony and excelllent complexity. While it is somewhat approachable now, this is clearly a wine for 5-7 years down the road with peak drinking after 10 years. Proof that a big, young Napa Cabernet Sauvignon can offer a marvelous sense of finesse.”
