SIMPLY AMAZING & BARGAIN PRICED RED

PARCELICA CHICA YECLA 2019 BY BODEGAS ANTONIO CANDELA

Parcelica Chica Yecla 2019 by Bodegas Antonio Candela is an outstanding value. Having the privilege of living in Spain for many years, I had the pleasure of sampling many wines during that time. So, I can wholeheartedly say that today’s bottle is a screaming bargain. A Mediterranean red of uncommon finesse and lively energy. The only thing that’s small about this wine is the price! Only $15.99 a bottle.

Parcelica Chica Yecla 2019 is a screaming bargain. A Mediterranean red of uncommon finesse and lively energy.

Hailing from Yecla, Spain, an area known mostly for producing bulk reds, winemaker Antonio Candela shows this part of Spain’s Levante is capable of so much more. His vines are literally grown on rocks in a desert (see picture below). The terroir is very similar to that of Chateauneuf du Pape. There is no irrigation. These vines have to dig deep to find their water pulling in all sorts of mineral flavours in to the wines. The yields are low as there is not a lot of water and the temperature is typically very high during the days. However, the cool nights provide freshness and balance to the wines.

This Monastrell-Syrah blend is full-bodied and powerful, but with balancing acidity and finesse from Candela’s old vines and high altitude.

Pair it with slow braised, grilled, or stewed meats as well as cheeses and pâtés. This wine is ridiculously good for the price.

TASTING NOTE / “A very rich, juicy wine with the alcohol coming through, but there’s plenty of blue fruit and polished, chewy tannins. Flavourful finish. New wood comes through. Yet, I like the opulence and the flavours here. Better in 2021.”
