There is no better way to start an evening, a dinner, a party, or even a dinner party than with a glass of bubbly like Duran Cava Gran Reserva Brut 2016 by Ramon Canals. Bubbly has this way of putting people in the mood to celebrate.

What was once an area largely overlooked by the wine community is increasingly being studied, mapped, and celebrated as a world-class terroir. Today’s offer sheds light on Penedès, the epicentre of sparkling Cava production in Spain. They’ve got the tradition, they’ve got the terroir…all they need is the respect, and this mineral-etched Cava Brut Gran Reserva from Ramon Canals has mine. It drinks like Champagne at 1/3 the price.

Duran Cava Gran Reserva Brut drinks like Champagne at 1/3 the price.

Cava is the Spanish equivalent of Champagne and is produced in the traditional French Methode Champenoise, the same process under which Champagne is produced. This method provides a secondary fermentation in the bottle that creates those soft beautiful bubbles. Duran’s Gran Reserva Cava is aged as long as most Champagne. A good percentage of the juice in the Duran is Chardonnay which seems to add more depth than what you typically find in a Cava.

5 year old Gran Reserva Brut is versatile and pairs with anything you can think of (seafood or anything with a little spice!).

TASTING NOTE / “Pale straw-yellow with fine and slowly rising effervescence. This Cava shows fresh white fruits, lingering citruses, and tropical fruits. White floral aromatics. The nose of this wine is one that we would expect for such a long aged cava. It is very toasty with dry fruit aromas. A background that is intense with some aniseed aromas and total freshness. This sparkling wine Grand Reserva Brut Cava from the Duran vineyards is complex, well-balanced, and fresh. Ripe fruit entwine with creams and fresh toasted notes. Well-integrated effervescence and excellent acidity that lend this cava a lively expression that is very pleasant. The finish is long and sweet and seduces us to drink more. “
