Portugal’s Douro Valley is a treasure trove of incredible white wines, including of course Hasso White Douro DOC 2018, thanks in large part to the number of indigenous grapes. Today we shine a spotlight on “Hasso”, a delicious, mineral, and thought-provoking white wine. This classy, bone-dry white leaps off the value charts, scoring 92 points by the International Wine Challenge last year.

Winemaking in Portugal’s Douro Valley dates back to Roman times, and of course the emergence of Port wine in the 16th century put this snaking, chiseled-from-schist river valley on the international wine map. Epic dry wines from here have long existed, but only recently has the broader wine world has taken notice.

If you enjoy white wines with electrifying energy, this one must be on your hit list. It’s an easy-drinking, fruity and fresh in character wine that makes it an excellent choice for the gastronomic enthusiast in you. Try it with a grilled Chilean Sea bass accompanied by a light mixed salad. Sushi and shellfish also pairs well, such as stone crab, mussels and clams. Yum!

THE PRODUCER

Kranemann Wine Estates’ vineyards are located in the Vale do Rio Távora sub-zone.  The vineyards here enjoy a particularly remarkable Douro location that ensures the vines develop at lower than average temperatures. With the unique temperature,  prevailing poor schist, and granite soil, the Kranemann family are able to create surprisingly fresh and elegant wines with plenty of character. As a result of these key factors, their wines have the body and complexity.

The unique combination of north-facing vineyards, altitude and variety of schist and granite soils, enable them to produce highly elegant, fresh and mineral wines fit for gastronomic purposes and with excellent potential for ageing.
