Muscadet Sèvre & Maine Sur Lie 2020 by Vignoble Drouard—and Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine in general— are measured on a quality-to-price ratio, they rate as genuinely great white wines. These wines have been hiding in plain sight forever, yet continue to be overlooked: the Muscadets of the lower Loire Valley are some of our favourite white-wine values.

These wines have been hiding in plain sight forever, yet continue to be overlooked: the Muscadets of the lower Loire Valley are some of our favourite white-wine values.

Vignoble Drouard is a Loire Valley producer whose prices remain frozen in the past. This latest vintage is loaded with mineral depth, delicious fruit, with a touch of hazelnut creaminess imparted from time spent aging “sur lie” (translating to “on the lees”, or spent yeast cells, left over from fermentation).

One of the greatest parts of preparing a meal is thinking about the wines that you are going to enjoy with it. When it comes to seafood, Muscadet is one of our favourites. Ideal for oysters and other shellfish as well as salmon tartar or just as an aperitif.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Originating from early Roman plantings and produced all through the Middle Ages, the wines from Loire have been blessed by religious orders, drunk by nobility and written about by scholars such as native son François Rabelais.

It’s simple to explain why the Loire Valley is one of our favourite wine regions. We simply can’t think of any other place where you can find so much diversity of grape varieties alongside such excellent value and a high proportion of small-scale winemakers devoted to farming organically. Such as today’s featured winemaker Christophe Drouard of Domaine de la Noe, whose wine hales from a plot of 35 year-old vines bordering the river Maine.
