BABY POMEROL

LALANDE-DE-POMEROL 2018 BY CHATEAU VIEUX CARDINAL LAFAURIE

Bottle of Lalande-de-Pomerol 2018 by Chateau Vieux Cardinal Lafaurie lying on a wooden table next to grapes and 4 corks.

The facts on Lalande-de-Pomerol 2018 by Chateau Vieux Cardinal Lafaurie are truly impressive.

First, it hails from Lalande-de-Pomerol, which is without a doubt one of the greatest “next-door” appellations in the world—especially where today’s producer of the moment, “Chateau Vieux Cardinal Lafaurie” is located, on a plateau of clay and gravel (like Château Lafleur), effectively identical to the soil composition of some of the greatest parts of neighbouring Pomerol.

Second, 2018 in Bordeaux was an excellent, possibly even legendary vintage and can be compared in quality to recent excellent years such as 2016 and 2015.

Third and most importantly, it is a stop-you-in-your tracks value. This wine snuck onto our table next to labels triple the price, shocking even our most experienced tasters. Heck, I’d even call this a ‘Baby Pomerol’. The value proposition here is sensational: this is a tremendous amount of wine for the money!

It’s drinking deliciously now and will continue to for the next decade-plus!

BEST PAIRINGS / Cured Meat, Red Meat, Veal roasted

TASTING NOTE / “A bold, smoky and generous wine, this shows perfumed wood-aging flavours as well as ripe blackberry fruits. Dominated by Merlot, but with a good proportion of Cabernet Franc, the wine should age well.”

A LITTLE HISTORY

Château Vieux Cardinal Lafaurie can trace its history in the village of Néac back to the 12th century, when Knights of St. John of Jerusalem established a hospital at the current location. Today, the estate plants with focus on growing grapes for dense, concentrated wines that exemplify the style of Lalande-de-Pomerol. This goal is aided significantly by the age of the estate’s vines, with plots being at least 50 years old.
