THE ULTIMATE GRILLER’S RED
EL PICARO TORO BY MATSU 2020
El Picaro Toro by Matsu 2020 is a red wine that is luscious and lively at the same time. This wine has made appearance after appearance at WineOnline and for good reason!
Picaro in Spanish means ‘rogue’ or ‘rascal’, and this rapscallion of a wine has a youthful interpretation of the Toro region’s style. The word toro means ‘bull’, and while it is unclear exactly how the regions’ name came about, the bull is nonetheless a fitting symbol for robust red Toro wines.
This is a stellar house wine that won’t break your budget. It’s structured, persistent, aromatic, and downright electric. Hand harvested, this wine spends three months in French oak to add a touch more complexity, while maintaining its fruit forward profile.
Braised short ribs? Grilled ribeye steak? Roasted pork loin or a juicy melt-in-your-mouth burger? Whatever you’ll be cooking up, go big on flavour and if it wasn’t already a special occasion, with this red at your side, it will be!

Aromas are of ripe blackberries and raspberries, with subtle hints of fresh cocoa. The palate is bold yet supple, with ripe tannins and a mineral grip.”
A LITTLE HISTORY
Rather than go with a traditional label design, a branding team came up with the great concept of portraying 3 generations of winemakers on their current bottles. A great face to a great wine.
The vineyard itself, dry and desolate, lays about 40 kilometres east of the Portuguese border. Its high altitude bush vines of 50 to 100 years of age, struggle to survive and produce a very low yielding crop.
