Polkura Syrah 2018 by Viña Polkura blew us away at the tasting table: great Chilean wines fly under the radar every time! Surprisingly, this is its first-ever appearance at WineOnline, and I honestly couldn’t tell you why it hasn’t come sooner. Whatever it is, it’s finally here! However, I’m sure the following news won’t come as a bombshell, but we still feel compelled to share it: Quantities are extremely limited.
In addition to being an exciting, new-generation Chilean wine, I can’t stress enough how much pleasure this wine delivers at this price. It is a seriously impressive bottle from an under-explored, unspoiled place: It will blow the doors off countless culty reds costing twice as much!
The heart of Chilean wine production is its network of sun-splashed, east-west river valleys—home to so many famous Bordeaux château owners these days it’s hard to keep track—but Polkura has ventured further afield and the results are stunning!
Founded by two winemaking friends in 1998, Sven Bruchfeld and Gonzalo Muñoz vowed to craft the finest Chilean Syrah possible. They do so on a tiny scale, so it’s still only known to insiders. That said, with crazy high scores for EVERY vintage from the likes of Wine Spectator, Suckling, Atkins and Wine Advocate, they won’t be able to hide their Syrah for long.
Polkura is a little hill at the western end of Colchagua Valley. The name means ‘yellow stone’, a reference to the yellow granite that mingles with the volcanic clay soils there. The microclimate lends a lovely pepper complexity to appealing blackberry, fig and liquorice notes. More northern Rhône than New World.
