CHAMPAGNE BRUT CONVERSATION GRAND CRU BLANC DE BLANCS BY JL VERGNON NV
If you love elite Blanc de Blancs Champagne, Champagne Brut Conversation Grand Cru Blanc De Blancs by Jl Vergnon NV is a wine to know. This small domaine based in Le Mesnil sur Oger, is producing spectacular wines from 100% Chardonnay, and 100% Grand Cru vineyards.
This Champagne is Le Mesnil to its core. Piercingly mineral driven to its core, and yet Vergnon’s mastery adds luxuriously textured layers that leave you coming back for more. It is a profound Grand Cru Champagne, and every sip just further confirms to me that this is one of the best estates in Le Mesnil and one of the most undervalued by the North American press.

TASTING NOTE / “The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Conversation Grand Cru is a terrific introduction to the range. It is a wine of tremendous breadth and real character, all of which comes through pretty much upon opening. This release is based on 2014, with a 20% 2013 reserve wines from vineyards in Mesnil, Oger and Avize. Chardonnay flavors are kicked up a few notches in this decidedly vinous, powerful Blanc de Blancs. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 16, 2019.”
A LITTLE HISTORY
Champagne’s Chardonnay epicentre is the Côte des Blancs, and within that sub-region, the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger reigns supreme. This is where you go for the ultimate Blanc de Blancs experience and today’s bottle is an essential label to own.
The domaine as it exists today was established in 1950, and it was in 1985 that Jean-Louis Vergnon first began producing estate-bottled wine. In 2002, seeking to gain the most from their enviable holdings primarily in the village of Le Mesnil, the family brought in the talented Christophe Constant to take over all aspects of farming and winemaking. With his infusion of energy and an inspired sense of direction, Christophe upgraded the farming practices on the domaine’s prized, old vine vineyards (including the legendary Les Chetillons) and began to make highly personal wines full of power and tension. Under his stewardship, JL Vergnon has turned into one of the most exciting grower champagnes in the Côtes des Blancs.
The wines are vinified in stainless steel tanks and aged for a minimum of 3 years before release.
