I adore (and have indeed worshiped on occasion) the wines of Produttori di Barbaresco for many years. Barbaresco DOCG 2017 by Produttori Del Barbaresco is a gem. Last fall I was able to visit this historic winery in the heart of Barbaresco. It was more than a visit or tasting. It was a pilgrimage.

This winery was founded over seventy years ago by 19 farmers and a parish priest. It was during a time of extreme poverty that this group came together, and more or less from the time of their inception, Produttori has become a benchmark for classic Barbaresco.

Year in and year out, even their least expensive expression of Barbaresco is distinguished, individual, long-lived and above all, delicious.

It was a huge pleasure to taste this wine at the Cantina in Barbaresco. It showcased what an aromatic and enticing vintage 2017 was, while also delivering sublime approachability. It’s no wonder Decanter Magazine included it as one of the ‘Top Wines of the Year 2021’. This will be utterly thrilling over the next 10+ years.

TASTING NOTE / “Aged for 24 months in large oak casks. It offers layers of aromatics woven together with tar, forested earth, dried cherry, and sweet tobacco. The palate is ripe and pure, with raspberry leather, tea leaf, and blood orange. It is mouth-filling, with fruit that is long and persistent, fine tannins, and a lifted finish. Finessed and elegant, the 2017 is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. 2021-2036.”
