HASSO TINTO DOURO DOC 2018 BY KRANEMANN

Bottle of Hasso Tinto Douro DOC 2018 by Kranemann placed on table outdoors with greenery and building in background.

Hasso Tinto Douro DOC 2018 by Kranemann originates in Portugal’s Douro Valley – a treasure trove of incredible red wines, thanks in large part to the number of indigenous grapes. Douro is one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions. Somehow, the wines have mostly managed to stay undervalued despite how well made they are. Going to visit is like a little slice of heaven. Terraced vineyards, beautiful winding roads that are very fun to drive, delicious food and some of the warmest people you will ever meet.

This versatile red leaps off the value charts, earning “Best Buy” by Wine Enthusiast—and it’s under $20!

Winemaking in Portugal’s Douro Valley dates back to Roman times, and of course the emergence of Port wine in the 16th century put this snaking, chiseled-from-schist river valley on the international wine map. We are shining a spotlight on “Hasso”, a delicious, supple, and thought-provoking red wine. This versatile red leaps off the value charts, earning “Best Buy” by Wine Enthusiast—and it’s under $20!

Why the dog on the label you ask? The wine is named after the family dog, “Hasso”, a trusted companion through quiet times and on adventures. It’s made from Portugal’s native grapes (Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional)—its black-fruit flavours are rich and soft which makes it an excellent choice to pair with heavy, fattier, saltier and spicier steaks & lamb. Yum!

TASTING NOTE / “Driven by its black-fruit flavors, the wine is rich and soft. There is an underlying layer of dry tannins that give the wine structure and lifts the ripe berry fruitiness. The wine, a blend of four classic Douro grapes, will be ready from late 2020.”

THE PRODUCER

Kranemann Wine Estates’ vineyards are located in the Vale do Rio Távora sub-zone.  The vineyards here enjoy a particularly remarkable Douro location that ensures the vines develop at lower than average temperatures. With the unique temperature,  prevailing poor schist, and granite soil, the Kranemann family are able to create surprisingly fresh and elegant wines with plenty of character. As a result of these key factors, their wines have the body and complexity.

The unique combination of north-facing vineyards, altitude and variety of schist and granite soils, enable them to produce highly elegant, fresh and mineral wines fit for gastronomic purposes and with excellent potential for ageing.
