Chablis 1er Cru La Fourchaume 2019 by Domaine De L’Enclos is a fine example of great Burgundian Chardonnay. As prices continues to climb into the stratosphere, it has left many wondering where to find the value. For us the answer is quite simple. Delicious, classically sculpted Premier Cru Chablis continues to offer the greatest deal for top quality Chardonnay from France.
Producers and critics have long touted “La Fourchaume” as one of the top Premier Crus, if not the best, and some have even been vocal about elevating it to Grand Cru status.
The vignerons’ talent here is off the charts! Winemakers Romain and Damien Bouchard are Chablis Royalty. Their family has lived in the area for centuries, and have a vast array of old vineyards, including part of original parcel of La Fourchaume.
This wine is Burgundian at its core. The nose is full of the white flowers and stone fruit you would expect of Chablis, but the palate is where it truly sings. It has layers of orchard and citrus fruit with hints of beeswax, honeycomb and oyster shell. Layered and textural, its richness is cleaned off the palate with a mineral driven spine that goes on and on. There are very few white wines in the world that achieve this combination of precision and pure pleasure (and most of them are in Burgundy).
How these wines haven’t yet leapt across the $100 threshold is beyond me! If you’ve ever wondered why people like us become such fanatics about white Burgundy, taste this “La Fourchaume” and you’ll understand.

TASTING NOTE / Sourced from vines planted in the 60s, 80s, and 90s. The La Fourchaume 1er Cru is superb. Rich and ample with tremendous structure, the 2019 possesses terrific depth and textural resonance throughout the finish. Orchard fruit, lemon confit, almond and menthol infuse the 2019 with notable complexity and intensity. Textured, oily and deep with a bit of a savoury edge, the 2019 has so much to offer.
