It started, as these things always do, at our tasting table in June of last year, where this spicy, fruity and silky blend of Nero d’Avola and Syrah had us all entranced—we weren’t alone in our thoughts, having received countless requests from our members to bring it back.

This organic beaut comes from sunny Sicily, and we can basically taste the sunshine in each sip. The heat dries out these grapes, sweetening them slightly in the process, resulting in a rich raisin and strawberry flavour that’s vegan-friendly too.

The secret? It’s made in an “Appassimento-style” blend of Nero d’Avola, Syrah and other local grape varieties. Appassimento means the grapes are dried before making the wine to concentrate the sugars and flavours. This is the method used to make Amarone.

A proportion of the grapes are sun-dried before vinification. Creating a red wine using appassimento brings a whole new dimension to a wine—Siccari has a rich and complex structure, with very soft berryish fruits and a touch of spice and a food-friendly twang of acidity. Incredibly characterful, it has layer upon layer of intense and diverse fruit flavours and a very long finish.

For me, it’s a new value benchmark from Sicily—one of the most dynamic wine regions in the world right now. This wine will prove to be an indispensable “skeleton key” at your dinner table and at just $20—not to be missed!
