LOIRE VALLEY SANCERRE

SANCERRE TERRE DE MAIMBRAY 2020 BY PASCAL & NICOLAS REVERDY

Sancerre Terre de Maimbray 2020 reminds me that the classics, are classics for a reason. One of the great things of being in the wine business is making new discoveries—finding great wines from unsung grapes or places. For some, the race for something new sometimes begets a “been there, done that” attitude toward well-known classics like Sancerre.

This is a place, and grape, and a vintage all coming together in perfect harmony.

Known as The Garden of France, the history of winemaking in the Loire dates back to 500 AD, with the vines in Sancerre among the first to be officially recognized. Sancerre is the benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc in Europe—crisp and fruity, with racy acidity. The soil is composed of limestone and fossilized seashells, which gives the wine an unmistakable minerality.

It’s nice to be reminded that Sancerre is one of the great white wines of the world, not merely something you order in a restaurant when you don’t recognize anything else on the list. This is a place, and grape, and a vintage all coming together in perfect harmony.

The domaine of Pascal and Nicolas Reverdy is well known to those who enjoy Sancerre and who also have an eye for a well-priced bottle. It hails from a blend of plots from the slopes Maimbray, with clay-limestone terroir known as ‘white earth’.

This is a wine of nuanced character with intense notes of white flowers and citrus fruits, yielding a lively and spicy palate that is best enjoyed young. Works wonderfully with fresh seafood, mussels or oysters.

TASTING NOTE / Pascal Reverdy produces an ultra-precise, concentrated Sancerre. The same strata of Kimmeridgian chalk that gives Chablis its classic zip surfaces in the Reverdy`s village, Maimbray. This 2020 is very pale gold, aromas being open and expressive, with notes of elderflower – very fresh. The palate is intensely flavoured and concentrated, with chalky minerality and a beautiful, silky texture. The finish is long and complete.
