FARNIO ROSSO PICENO DOC 2020 BY GAROFOLI

If you were to drink Farnio Rosso Piceno 2020 DOC from Garofoli in one of the Marche’s many trattorie along the Adriatic Coast, you’d likely classify it as enchanting and delicious as you snapped photos of the label in your quest to try to obtain it at home in Canada. Sometimes, those experiences get lost in translation when you try to recreate them in your kitchen at home, but Garofoli’s 2020 “Rosso Piceno” won’t let you down. It will lift you up.

I can’t think of another wine I’ve tried recently at a sub $18 price-point that so perfectly captures the true characters of Montepulciano and Sangiovese.

This isn’t a ‘collector’ wine, it’s a food lover’s wine—the kind that makes you want to cook dinner and invite family over, with a few bottles ever at the ready.

In the meat and pizza temples that line the nearby Adriatic coast line, wines like this have pride of place. It’s beautiful without any ‘makeup’ whatsoever, and if you’ve got some room, I can’t think of another wine I’ve tried recently at a sub $18 price-point that so perfectly captures the true characters of Montepulciano and Sangiovese.

If it’s me (and it will be), I’ll be making veal sandwiches and pizza at home this evening (guanciale and parmigiano, or prosciutto and rucula), with a glass of Garofoli’s Rosso Piceno in hand. Drink now or hold.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The history of the Garofolis is a story of people and of a family that has been identified with winemaking for five generations. The same philosophy has always guided them: a constant updating of production techniques while respecting traditional and historic winemaking methods; attention to the evolution of the market and its requirements along with loyalty to the values of the special characteristics that the traditions of the territory have transmitted.

Vini Garofoli is the oldest producer in the Marche (150+ years old) and Its secret weapon is Daria Garofoli who remained behind the scenes for 33 years as a full- time mum, English teacher and wife to chairman Gianfranco Garofoli.

Today, Daria Garofoli is of the top 10 women in Italian wine, spending 100 days per year on the road bring her family’s wines to the world stage!

The winery is now run by the fourth and fifth generations—brothers Carlo and Gianfranco Garofoli and their three children Gianluca, Caterina, and Beatrice. Garofoli today has four family-owned vineyards totaling 128 acres: at the family’s base in Castelfidardo outside Loreto, in the Castelli di Jesi along the Adriatic coast.
