Langhe Nebbiolo Disanfrancesco 2019 is aimed at devotees of Piedmont’s most hedonistic and coveted luxury labels. Still, I’d wager that many Canadian collectors won’t know this label. They will, however, be deeply familiar with this winemaker’s other projects.
Roberto Voerzio is now a living legend of Piedmont, founding his philosophy on 3 pillars: prime location, natural farming, and the unique maintenance of vineyards—low yields, extreme selection (green harvest) with high density plantation. These are not the Barolo’s of yesteryear, but rather a rich and luxurious approach to Nebbiolo that produces spellbinding wines that are approachable and accessible while young. Instead of paying $200-$700 plus for his Barolos, today we are offering this scintillating Langhe Nebbiolo.
It would be tone-deaf to call this wine “cheap,” but I have no qualms saying that for lovers of this style, it is a steal. Rather than the tannic style of traditional Barolo producers, the Nebbiolo here is rich and soulful, wonderfully juicy yet utterly defined, with flavors that tend toward riper, blacker fruits. As with all the world’s greatest winemakers, the secret to Roberto’s success lies in his maniacally strict and labour intensive approach to farming. He takes this to the extreme and because of this earns numerous accolades, while his wines are considered authentic, near ‘cult’-like masterpieces, sought after by collectors and wine lovers worldwide.
