“This wine stands out as a sensational effort just a few years away from full maturity. A 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine displays loads of scorched earth and smoky barbecue scents along with blueberry, black raspberry and black currant. The wine is expansive, has a savory, broad palate and a full-bodied mouthfeel, yet possesses vivid purity and uplift. The tannins are still present, but they are sweet and well-integrated. This wine should hit full maturity in another year or two and last for at least 20 more years.”

If you want some of the best Bordeaux has to offer, drinking in its prime, you will have to consider the 2000 Pape Clement. This 2000 Pape Clement epitomizes what i look for in a Bordeaux. This is a 50/50 blend of Cab and Merlot. There is plenty of strength and power while the finesse is wonderfully maintained. These wines are coming direct from Bordeaux. The provenance is perfect.

Chateau Pape Clement in Pessac, near Bordeaux, is named after its most famous owner: Pope Clement V. Château Pape Clément is one of the Oldest Grands Crus de Bordeaux. Archbishop of Bordeaux, Bertrand de Goth became Pope in 1305 under the name of Clement V. The estate took its name from this unique French Pope and its wine became an icon.

Separation of berries from their stalks is done entirely by hand. At this unique technique succeeds separate vinification: the small volume tanks layout allows vinified separately fruits from different plots of the domain. Grapes can thus fully express their diversity. These are distinctions that provide the basis for assembly work with each vintage.

For those of you that have enough older wine in your cellar, and you feel good about waiting a decade or 2 more for your wines to mature, we have received 24 more bottles of the 2009 Pape Clement. Yeah, this wine scored 100 points, though i do not believe it is materially better than the 2000. Just my opinion, though i find it much easier to taste wines that are closer to being ready to drink.

Last, but not least, if you feel that these prices are a little too high for your budget, we have some 1995 La Gaffelliere. At less than half the price of the Pape Clement, you are still getting something delicious, that is drinking perfectly, in its prime.
