“The 2014 Campo Arriba comes from one of the highest elevations in Yecla and it’s a blend of 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 10% Grenache aged three months in small French oak. This winery, started in 1925 by the Candela family, has really hit pay day with this amazing value. Blackberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, and chalky minerality dominate the aromatics and flavors. It is full-bodied, the price is absurdly low for a wine of this quality, and I suspect it can age nicely for another 5-6 years, although its true value is its exuberance, fruit purity and density.”

The Campo Arriba is the ultimate summertime crowd pleaser BBQ wine and i suspect there are a number of you that would like to have as much of this around as is possible. The Campo Arriba has arrived in Canada and the release is imminent, though likely still a week or 2 away. Take advantage of this gloomy summer today to order some awesome vino so you can have more time to enjoy the beautiful ones.

THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE ORDERED THIS WINE ALREADY, YOUR CASES HAVE BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR AND WILL BE DELIVERED UPON RELEASE.

We went out to visit Alfredo and his team at the Barahonda winery in Yecla a few months back. These grapes, as you can see in the picture above, are literally growing in the middle of a dessert. It does not rain much, if at all, and the vines are old. There is a ton of concentration and minerality in Barahonda’s wines as the roots go very deep and there is not a lot of water to be had. If you are wondering who the people in the shot are, one is the owner of Barahonda, then a few of us folks from WineOnline.ca.

It has become clear that there are a number of you that prefer the Carro over the Campo Arriba. This is another absolutely stunning value. The Syrah adds texture and depth that is astonishing at this price. If you like a big and bold style of wine, but do not like to pay the price that is typically demanded of a wine of this style, you likely want to ensure you own some of this.

Ready for something new and awesome? We have never before been able to bring in the Barahonda Blanco. This wine is always sold out. I was forced to try it blind and was under the distinct impression that this was a very expensive Rioja Blanco. This is another one of those unbelievable wines at a price tag that makes you scratch your head and wonder aloud, “how do they do it?”

If you are wondering how we continue to find the up and comer wine producers and especially those from Spain, it is due to the fact that we have legs on the ground over there. Jonny Bick has been full time with WineOnline.ca for nearly a decade and has the job of being on top of the European wine trends before they make it over here to North America. I commend him on the work he has done and continues to do. It is wonderful to be able to represent such terrific wineries.

Summer is here and it is important to ensure that we have plenty of nice wine around for maximum enjoyment and relaxation.

Have a great day!
