Puglia: Italy’s Secret to Value Wine. 92 Points

Sant’Andrea Primitivo by Cantine Paradiso 2019

Sant’Andrea Primitivo by Cantine Paradiso 2019 is the best-kept secret in Italian Red Wine – a 92 Point stunner!

If you want fruit-forward, ripe, red wine for a good price, look no further than Puglia. Some of the best values in Italian wine come from this sunny, dry region. This beautiful Italian red is both fun and interesting, while offering superb energy and power. Puglia has become our new-frontier alternative for high QPR (Quality-to-Price Ratio) wines. Much like the wines from Southern Spain, or Portugal, we often wonder how it is that wine this good stays so darn inexpensive.

This beautiful Italian red is both fun and interesting, while offering superb energy and power.

A 750mL bottle of Sant'Andrea Primitivo Puglia by Cantine Paradiso stands against a plain white background, 92 point badge to the top left side of it.

Cantine Paradiso has been making wine in this heel of the boot of Italy since 1950. This peninsula is an old wine growing area dating back to the ancient Greeks. It is a very hot region cooled by nighttime maritime breezes. Today Cantine Paradiso, utilizes cutting-edge technologies in their production methods while still respecting the tradition of three generations of winemakers. Staying true to their traditional roots, this wine is an expression of Puglia’s rich history, terroir and food culture.

An ultimate match for foods with big flavours – spicy sausages, grilled meats, eggplant parmesan or any pasta with very flavourful red sauces.

An actual trip to Puglia is probably not in the cards, but a few bottles of this with some steaks off the grill will get me mighty close—this is the ‘house red’ of the moment and the perfect wine to showcase the terroir of the region—vibrant and bursting with juicy layers of ripe fruit.

Sant’Andrea Primitivo by Cantine Paradiso 2019: What the Critics Say

“Cinematic and Mediterranean, Pugliese and really quite luminous so a bit other or different for primitivo of the place. Some may find it lean or light for the grape but in fact it’s quite linear, lovely and elegant. With a slight chill and a simple red sauce in optimum season you could drink so much of this outdoors, overlooking water, all summer long.”
