Verdicchio: Arguably, Italy’s Greatest Native White

Verdicchio di Matelica DOC by Collestefano 2019

Verdicchio di Matelica DOC by Collestefano 2019 is a 96 point white wine and one of the finest expressions of Verdicchio DOC of Verdicchio di Matelica. Compared to the better known low lying, coastal Verdicchio di Castelli di Jesi, Verdicchio di Matelica appellation is further inland and with higher elevation. Wines here typically show much greater complexity and minerality due to the unique terroir.

This is the ultimate form of wine appreciation and will make you appreciate Verdicchio, a grape the author/educator/wine critic Ian D’Agata says is “arguably Italy’s greatest native white grape.”

This isn’t a ‘collector’ wine, it’s an approachable wine in both style and price point. Most importantly this is a food lover’s wine, the kind that makes you want to cook dinner with a few chilled bottles ever at the ready.

Verdicchio di Matelica DOC by Collestefano 2019: What the Critics Say

“Buzzing, salty, mineral-toned green fruit and fresh herb aromas followed by soaring acidity which gives freshness and length. Amazing value.”

Verdicchio di Matelica DOC: Producer

The story of the Marchionni family, the owners of Collestefano, is a path of redemption. As a family of farmers, the Marchionnis arrived in the 1960s at Rustano di Castelraimondo (MC), in the valley of Verdicchio di Matelica. This hard-working family managed to acquire, in 1978, the small hillside village that has always been called “Collestefano”. In 1998 Fabio Marchionni, son of the owners and fresh graduate from Oenology, bottled his first vintage of Verdicchio di Matelica.

This 2019 Verdicchio has already received Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, and we expect that this vintage to equal or better the ratings for the 2018.

The Marchionni family has always followed organic practices gaining the certification in 1995. Their vineyards are part of a broader self-sustainable, eco-friendly and balanced system. The soil is treated only with organic manure, thus minimizing the presence of copper.

Wine Characteristics

Made with organically farmed grapes, this delicious white opens with aromas of citrus blossom and white stone fruit. The tangy, medium-bodied palate offers a lovely depth of flavours that include juicy tangerine, lime, white peach, bitter almond and mineral. Crisp acidity brightens the rich flavours and carries through to the clean finish.
