Jules Barges was the first to ’domaine bottle’ his own wine in 1929. The family’s knowledge, passed down through generations of winemakers has made them masters of their craft. Gilles Barge took his family’s knowledge and tradition and has headed one of the most scandalously underpriced domaines in all of the northern Rhone for three decades.

Barge’s wines are extremely rare, and difficult to get your hands on – only 100 cases were available for the whole US market last year. “Cuvee de Plessy” is the iconic epitome of Cote Blonde finesse. In fact, in 1982, when Marius Gentaz’s UK importer asked for more Côte Rôtie, Gentaz – possibly the most famous winemaker ever in Côte Rôtie – pointed him to Domaine Barge, specifically recommending the Cuvée made from the vines of M. du Plessy.

Barge’s wines are extremely rare, and difficult to get one’s hands on – only 100 cases were available for the whole US market last year!

This wine contains old vine Syrah from Cote Rotie’s most legendary lieu-dits with names like Lancement, Côte Blonde and Boucharey. As single vineyard wines from anyone of note, you would pay hundreds of dollars a bottle, which is what makes this such an incredible value.

This wine captures the very essence of Syrah as grown in this region: perfumed as all get out; deeply meaty, smoky, and mineral; balanced and refined. It is unendly complex and will repay at least two decades of cellaring, but will provide great pleasure throughout its entire life. These are not wines of power, but rather of elegance, vibrance, and character. This is a wine that every serious collector should have in their cellar.
