LIQUID GOLD

TIPSY HILL CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017 BY PERTARINGA

Tipsy Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 by Pertaringa is flat-out delicious, masterfully crafted Aussie red, and that speaks volumes coming from us. WineOnline is mostly dominated by Euro wines, so on the rare occasion we venture “down under” for a top-shelf red, you know we’ve struck liquid gold.

Today, it’s in the form of a jaw-droppingly elegant, ancient-soil,  Cabernet Sauvignon from McLaren Vale: This wine flaunts a spectacular balance and buoyancy, all while hinting at fascinating elements of Napa Cabernet opulence.

James Halliday, Australia’s foremost wine critic, awarded this Cabernet 99 Points / Top 100 in his namesake book, Halliday Wine Companion.

Bec Hardy Wines is the namesake estate owned by 6th generation, Bec Hardy, of the historic Hardy family of Southern Australia. Bec’s great-great-grandfather, Thomas Hardy, arrived from the UK in 1850 and is largely credited for establishing the wine industry in South Australia (Adelaide, McLaren Vale, Clare, and Barossa Valleys). Today, Bec is the first female vigneron to carry on her family’s tradition.

The Tipsy Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is from Bec Hardy’s vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. The ancient soils and elevation of the Tipsy Hill vineyard offer the perfect conditions for growing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The property also includes a stunning garden, featuring the rare Tipsy Hill Imperial Concubine rose, from which the name originates.

Marked by a perfect balance of power and finesse, the Tipsy Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is approachable in youth, and yet ageable for a decade or longer. Its vivid, remarkably plush, but there’s also a wild undercurrent that gives this wine an Aussie-stamped identity.

I’ve tasted a lot of pricey Napa Cabs. This is distinctly not Napa and like Halliday, we applaud its category-busting opulence. I could easily rattle off a large number Napa Cabs that simply cannot match the degree of nuance and purity in the 2017 Tipsy Hill Cabernet.

Open-fermented, 14 days on skins, pressed to barrel (50% new French hogheads) on gross lees for 9 months, further rackings over the second 9 months of its maturation. A marvellous wine, fluid, juicy and vibrant, with a very long finish, the tannins a gossamer web”
