California Pinot Noir by Solid Ground 2018 hit our tasting table with a combination of depth and minerality so invigorating we wondered if we read the label correctly or the price tag (or perhaps we just made the wrong assumptions about Lodi). Regardless, this is an utterly delicious Pinot from the artisan winemakers at Solid Ground.

A perfect example of Lodi terroir, this Pinot expresses big fruit and ample richness.

This producer is tucked away between the San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the appellation called “Lodi”—a region known to be the centre of California’s wine production, rugged and a little untamed; coyotes still outnumber people⁠—and that’s just how they like it.

Solid Ground churns out wines that encapsulate perfect examples of Lodi terroir⁠—big fruit and ample richness. It’s approachable and elegant, with a fantastic price tag to match. It’ll go down just-right with a juicy steak, pulled pork, barbecue ribs or a soul satisfying hamburger.

TASTING NOTE / “A perfect example of Lodi terroir, this Pinot expresses big fruit and ample richness for the varietal. The nose pops with lots of floral tones, cherry, raspberry and hints of blackberry. The blackberry notes, from the blended Zinfandel, gives this wine its distinct Lodi character. The palate is soft and round with good weight for the varietal, yet still maintains the gentle acidity in the mid-palate that is distinctly Pinot. Pairs well with Pulled Pork Dishes, Pasta and Roasted Chicken.”
