TOP 100 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
LAKESIDE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2019 BY PERTARINGA
It’s hard to fathom how Lakeside Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 slips into the market under $25.
Representing the 6th generation of the pioneering Hardy family in South Australia, Bec Hardy is – remarkably – the first woman in her family to continue the winemaking tradition. More than this, in addition to her own eponymous winery, she’s taken on her father’s iconic estate, Pertaringa. Bec’s great-great-grandfather, Thomas Hardy, arrived from the UK in 1850 and is largely credited for establishing the wine industry in South Australia (Adelaide, McLaren Vale, Clare, and Barossa Valleys).
Known for their near-perfect scoring Tipsy Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Pertaringa’s double-edged sword is their command for the absolute top quality in all of the wines they make at the estate. That’s music to our ears since we’re of the (strong) opinion that any region-leading producer’s most affordable option should leave a deep impression. Today’s 2019 “Lakeside” Cabernet does just that: each sip is supple, polished, and impossibly delicious, but that’s what great wines do—they make the winemaking aspect seem effortless.
Given its dynamic combination of complexity, refreshment, terroir expression, and value, add in the fact that this is their entry-level offering, which landed on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines list is a testament to the high bar that Bec sets at this estate.
This is, dollar for dollar, one of the best values you will find coming out of Mclaren Vale—actually, make that all of Australia. It’s that good.

TASTING NOTE / “This rose-colored South Aussie Cab delivers in a big way. It opens with bright, lucid aromas of red berry, baking spice, tree bark and flowers. The tannins are well-integrated, soft yet present, gently tugging on the fruit, which gets a lift from the crunchy acidity. It’s a modern, medium-weight Aussie Cab that should be a weeknight staple.”
